Birdwatching: hoopoe

I had never seen a
hoopoe before
until I saw two two
weeks ago, they
were walking on the edge
of a road together,
and then again I saw one
today walking Betty
with my nephew,
clear as day, hoopoe,
changing the day,
its long thin beak,
sage,
the long tuft of feathers
coming out of the head,
regal,
the black and white wings,
edgy,
the solitary low flight of it
floating like an arrow
across the dead zone
of Cyprus,
breath-taking

It’s just a bird
my nephew said
He’s only
nine

Look! A hoopoe!
